How to re-present unpaid Direct Debits

April 5, 2023

Every organisation understands the importance of cash flow – and, if you've ever had Direct Debits returned unpaid, you will also understand the frustration and financial impact that it can cause. Fortunately, there is a solution – re-presenting the Direct Debit.

Re-presenting Direct Debits

A re-presented Direct Debit is a Direct Debit that is presented again for collection, having previously been returned unpaid by the bank. This is a simple and effective way to collect funds owed to you. However, there are some criteria that must be met:

  • The re-presented Direct Debit must be presented within 30 days of the original presentation.
  • The amount being collected must be the same as the original presentation.
  • It must be identified by the transaction code '18'.

Rules to follow for successful re-presentation

The Bacs Service User’s Guide and Rules to the Direct Debit Scheme have outlined some best practices for re-presenting Direct Debits. According to the guidelines, a re-presentation should only take place if there is a reasonable assumption that the collection will be successful.

Understanding the reason for the failure

It's important to understand why the Direct Debit failed the first time. If it was due to a timing issue and the funds were not available, re-presentation can be a simple path to a successful collection. However, if the failure is due to the Payer disputing the collection, re-presentation may not be successful, and an alternative solution may be required.

Contacting the customer

If you decide to re-present the Direct Debit, it's best practice to contact the customer and offer them a new collection date. At least five working days' notice must be given for the new collection date. This approach not only helps you collect the funds but also shows your customers that you value their business and are willing to work with them.

Final thoughts

Re-presenting Direct Debits can be an effective way to collect funds owed to your organisation. However, it's important to understand the rules and guidelines to ensure that your efforts are successful. By following these guidelines and communicating with your customers, you can improve your cash flow and strengthen your relationships with your customers.

Last week, the ClearDebit team had the pleasure of exhibiting at the HLA Conference 2025 , and what an event it was! From start to finish, the conference was buzzing with energy, innovation, and inspiring conversations. It was fantastic to connect with so many professionals from across the healthcare and legal administration sectors, all eager to share ideas, challenges, and opportunities for the future. As exhibitors, we had the privilege of showcasing how ClearDebit supports organisations with robust and compliant Direct Debit solutions . But more than that, we were there to listen, and we certainly did. We heard firsthand about the payment challenges organisations face, from ensuring smooth collections to improving efficiency and transparency for both staff and clients. These conversations are invaluable to us, as they shape how we continue to support the sector.
