What happens if your bank rejects your application to submit Direct Debits directly to Bacs?

When reviewing applications, banks consider the capability to deliver the process in line with the Direct Debit scheme rules and the financial position in the case of indemnity claims to the customer and bank, and as a result, smaller businesses often don’t get approved to be a direct submitter.

Fortunately, Direct Debit Bureaus, including ClearDebit, are able to submit Direct Debits for organisations.

There are two ways of doing this:

  1. Facilities Management – a Direct Debit Bureau (like ClearDebit) sets up and owns a SUN for each organisation. The Bureau will collect payments into a separate account for each client.

  2. Collection through a Payments Institution – a Payments Institution collects the payments under their own SUN. The payments are deposited into their account and then paid out to clients.
